Though President Akuffo Addo has been elected as the new ECOWAS Chair, Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike has made a sharp critique that the timing for the position was wrong and that the NPP flag bearer will not be able to serve West Africa effectively in that capacity.
Leader, National Chairman and founder for United Progressive Party (UPP) premised his analysis on the fact that Akuffo Addo has only three months ahead of him into the December 2020 general elections and currently not certain as to whether Ghanaians will or will not renew his mandate as the President of Ghana.
“Synchronizing his election as the ECOWAS chair with the litany of campaign activities which he will be holding this year, it is clear that he won’t be able to execute his role efficiently to the good of member states”, he said in an interview with www.leakynews.net.
“His election was needless and immaterial. He shouldn’t have accepted the position because he doesn’t have much time at the moment”, Odike underlined. “You are not sure of victory, why go for that postion”.
ECOWAS ELECTIONS
President Akufo Addo was elected at the 57th ECOWAS summit which was held in Niamey, the capital of Niger. He will take over from the Niger President, Mahamadou Issoufou who was elected on June 29th, 2019.
His election makes him the 35th President to chair ECOWAS since its inception in 1975. He would have a year’s mandate within which he would run the affairs of the regional body.
