US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced that the United Nations was placing a visa restriction on Chinese Communist Party officials who are believed to be behind the restriction of freedoms in Hong Kong.
This new move was made ahead of China’s parliamentary meeting next week that is expected to enact new national security legislation for Hong Kong that has alarmed foreign governments and democracy activists in the special administrative region.
The US visa restrictions apply to “current and former CCP officials who are responsible for, or complicit in, undermining Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy”, Pompeo said on Friday.

Last month, President for the United States Donald Trump gave a reply to China’s new legislation by declaring a process to exclude special economic treatment that has allowed Hong Kong to remain a global financial center.
The announcement made by Pompeo represents the first concrete US step in response to China’s moves.
