President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday fired Health Minister Pavithra Wanniaarachchi and also reshuffled his cabinet consequent to growing opposition criticism that some of his ministries, including health, were not performing well as the Coronavirus pandemic worsened.
The reshuffle affected sectors including foreign, education, transport, media, power and energy portfolios.
Per record, his action makes the first major changes in the one-year-old government led by President Rajapaksa and his brother Prime Minister Mahinda.
Wanniaarachchi, who was heavily criticised by the opposition for his failure to control the COVID-19 situation, was reassigned to transport, which is considered a less important ministry.
Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has been appointed as the new minister for health.
On a more sad note, COVID-19 deaths have seen a rapid rise in the past few weeks in Sri Lanka, with over 160 deaths and over 3,500 cases daily.
Minister for Education Lakshman Peiris and Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena swapped position.
