jailbreak in South Africa: 68 escapees rearrested in a police manhunt

The Government of South Africa has made an announcement that all 68 inmates who broke out from a jail in Western Cape on Friday have been rearrested following to a two-day manhunt which was staged by the police.

The unfortunate jail-break occurred  after inmates at Malmesbury Prison “overpowered” staff during an exercise session.

According to authorieties, they locked up three officials in a cell before freeing other prisoners and escaping over a roof.

Previous reports said they had escaped while being transferred to court for trial.

South Africa’s prison body earlier stated 69 escapees  but the department of justice on Sunday informed they were 68 in total instead.

According to local media, the reason for this confusion was that one inmate presumed to have escaped actually “moved to a different cell during the chaos and never left the facility”.

Part of the escape was caught on camera by a member of the public who was sitting in his car.
