The overlord of the Asante Kingdom Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has earned a strong defense from faithful sympathizers against unguarded remarks peddled against him by detractors on issues related to “galamsey” and economic hardship in the country.
Members of a group called Asante Congress; an umbrella organization comprising over 34 Asante groups have replied disparagers on the above in their latest notice by saying that “it is irresponsible and dishonest for anyone to blame the Asantehene for issues like unemployment, “galamsey” and deforestation.”
They explained that Chiefs and for that matter the Asantehene “does not issue mining concessions and permits” and that Asantehene has contributed immensely towards the development of Asanteman and by extension Ghana even though he is a non-recipient of tax revenues.
“The Asantehene has been helping to promote development through various forms of advocacy and where possible, investment and investments attraction”.
The group highlighted other interventions like the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Education Fund which according to them has brought education in Ghana to a different level.
Others include awarding of scholarships, annual teachers awards, his assistance to government by supporting a World Bank Loan facility, restoration of peace in Dagbon after 15 years of seemingly intractable crisis plus a litany of others.
Premised on the foregoing, Chairman for the group Dr. Asafo Adjei said at a media briefing in Kumasi that “people who are casting aspersions at our King should direct their communications to the agencies responsible for the country’s development. We counsel such people that Asanteman will not sit down for any person who has nothing productive to do to continue running their mouths off at the expense of our King”.
