Energy Ministry To Relocate AMERI Power Plant To Ashanti Region

Ghana’s Ministry of Energy is considering switching the location of the Ameri Power plant to the Ashanti Region.

The plan is to enhance stable power supply.

Kwame Agyemang Budu, Managing Director for Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) made the disclosure at a press briefing which was held last week Thursday in Kumasi.

He explained that the Ministry was poised to embark on the relocation to address the disturbing unstable power supply in Kumasi and its environs.

The MD attributed the causes of the current outages in the region to the overload of Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) 161 KV transmission line serving the bulk supply point to the North, while the Bui power shot down because of low water level.

According to his statement, the Energy Ministry and the ECG had realised that the problem was because of all the power generators are located in the south, and before the power gets to the Ashanti Region loses are incurred, while voltages are reduced which affect businesses in the region, and could get worse before reaching the north.

Mr. Agyemang Budu disclosed that they were now having 5BS bulk supply points located at Anwomaso, Konongo, Obuasi and Dunkwa Central, 27 primary substations, 42 primary transmissions, 48 sub transmission feeder, fifteen 33KV feeders, 11,611KV feeders, and 5,435 distribution transformers.

He said that currently, the company was replacing multi-jointed cables voltages from Anwomaso to Buade and to Kaase, while creating an additional base at Kuntenase for Akyawakrom to connect Anwomaso substation to the airport, and about 55% express feeder from Fawoadi to Agona.

The MD also said the ECG was also creating a feeder from the Akyawkrom primary substation to link Effiduase primary substation by June this year, while strengthening the existing network to help evacuate more power.

He underscored that the ECG was working very hard with GRIDCo to solve the problems by the end of this year, and called for the cooperation of all customers and the public, to support them in this time of distress, to ensure that the power becomes stable by next year.
