A former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service and Presidential advisor on Health, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare has indicated that more persons are expected to recover from the novel coronavirus infection in the coming days.
His comment comes at a time the country’s recoveries are being scrutinized under skeptical lenses as some believe the ‘overnight’ spike in recoveries require further interrogation.
But speaking on Accra-based United Television on Saturday, May 16, 2020, Dr. Nsiah Asare said those who complained about the country’s low recovery rate now have something to smile about following the astronomical increase in recoveries.
He noted with emphasis that some 1,500 patients are waiting to be tested for the second time, after which they can also be declared recovered and projected that over 1,000 more people will recover from the virus.
“The number we have is the cumulative figure, which means all cases we’ve recorded since our first two cases from the 12th of March have been added up till today. And out of that 28 have passed on and the recoveries are also included, many of them have recovered.”
“If you are isolated for two weeks and you pass your two negative tests we discharge you to go home and pronounce you as recovered. If you remember, people were complaining about our rate being very low but now we thank God that our recovery rate has gone up over 1,000. We still have about 1,500 more patients who are awaiting their second tests so we can declare them as recovered. I have the confidence that over 1,000 people will recover soon,” he said.
According to Dr. Nsiah Asare, this means that the government’s response to the COVID-19 fight is working.
“So our strategy is really working. If you compare to other countries, we are doing very well,” he added.
