Assembly Members In Kumasi Cry For Better Condition Of Service

Assembly members in Ashanti region are boiling with rage against government over the latter’s failure to provide satisfactory incentives package to support their welfare.

Unlike Members of Parliament who benefit from juicy monthly emoluments plus other allowances, executives of Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM)- Ashanti Chapter have brought to light that assembly members only receive peewee amount of GHs 1,500 as their end of service benefit.

“This is a slap in the face!!…It is shocking to know that as the mouthpiece of the people, what assembly members get as a reward are insults, disrespects among others.”

Executive of the association lamented at a press briefing held in Kumasi on Wednesday, disclosing that most assembly members are highly indebted to their predecessors and are unable to pay them because their IGF is nothing to write home about.

Premised on the above, President for the group Hon Akwasi Bour Manu requested that the emolument of Presiding and Assembly members should be charged on the consolidated fund to pave way for adequate remuneration.

“To achieve this, parliament should revisit the article 250 clause 1&2 of the 1992 Constitution and section 11(2) of the local governance act.”
