Asawase constituency: SOS/NBU officials engage New-Zongo residents for peaceful elections

Residents of Asawasi New Zongo electoral area on the 10th October 2020 had their version of this year’s series of community engagement event which is being carried out by officials of the No Business as Usual (NBU) Project within the Asawase constituency.

Theirs was second to what was held at Asawase a week before which witnessed a sizeable audience including residents, official of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Civil Society Organizations, Islamic clerics, opinion leaders among others.

Considering the constituency being one of the key hotspots within Ashanti region, the outreach was rolled out by implementers of the project so as to touch the conscience of residents on the need to stay away from all factors that has the tendency to trigger violence ahead, during and after the upcoming December general elections.

So far, officials are done with two electoral areas  and are yet  replicate same in other two area within the municipality which are Sawaaba and Aboabo.

Speaking at the event, Municipal Director for NCCE Mr. Matthew Agbenu underlined political influence on the youth as one of the key causative factors of electoral violence.

Some political figures as a way of fulfilling their misdeeds so as to score an electoral advantage influence some youth with money to disturb the electoral proceedings.

He continued that youth who are involved in the various degrees of electoral malpractices often end up falling victim to its attendant consequences even to the extent of losing their lives.

He therefore charged them to resist all forms of foul enticement that is likely to mar the beauty of the upcoming elections.

Mr. Haruna Yoda, Founder for Centre for Community Livelihood Development  in his address highlighted some of the reciprocal effects of electoral violence including war and the claiming of lives of innocent residents.

He indicated that in the wake of bloody clashes, children and nursing mothers end up suffering the most. He therefore advised parents to talk to their children and again called on the youth to resist and abstain from all forms of political influence.
