Africa to get 220 million Covid-19 vaccine doses

The World Health Organization (WHO) has given statement that once a Covid-19 vaccine is approved, Africa will receive at least 220 million initial doses.

According to WHO Africa Program Area Manager Richard Mihigo the first batch will prioritize front-line healthcare workers and vulnerable groups.

Mihigo indicated that distribution will be based on the population of each country.

He underlined that all 54 countries had expressed interest in a Covid-19 vaccine.

Africa has a population of more than 1.3 billion people.

The global vaccine initiative, called COVAX, plans to help buy and fairly distribute 2 billion doses of approved vaccines by the end of 2021.

The initiative has nine vaccine candidates that are being tested worldwide.

According to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) boss Richard Hatchett, two of the vaccine candidates are currently being tested in Africa.

  1. The conspiracy theorists have done so much advance damage to the vaccine that we may not have people to accept it even when it is made free to us here in Africa.
